Selecting and Maintaining Quality Batting Cage Netting for Maximum Durability

Selecting and Maintaining Quality Batting Cage Netting for Maximum Durability

Whether your facility is a commercial batting cage or a backyard practice area, you will need high quality batting cage netting.

Keeping the netting clean will extend its life. A regular sweeping routine will remove dirt and dust from the netting.

Keeping the netting taut will reduce shifting caused by wind. To help with this, tie 2-3’ bungee or length of twine to the corner roof connectors on all sides.

Netting Material

Building a professional-grade batting cage requires a considerable investment of time, money and resources. It is important to get the facts about different batting cage net types and expected lifespans before making your selection. The right batting cage net will protect players, spectators and buildings/structures from high-velocity ball impact damage indoors or out.

The most basic batting cage netting type is nylon. Nylon batting cage netting is extremely durable, has the highest breaking strength and has superior abrasion resistance. However, it absorbs water and can lose its breaking strength by up to 20% per year if left outdoors. It is recommended to treat your nylon batting cage net with NetSeal for maximum water resistance and durability.

Netting Gauge

A Baseball Batting cage netting will have a netting gauge which is a good indicator of how heavy-duty the net is. A heavier gauge net won't wear down as quickly over time as a thinner one will.

Generally, the less usage you expect the batting cage to see, the thinner the netting can be and still provide adequate protection. This is because younger players place far less stress on the net.

ATXTurf offers a range of net sizes that cover youth through High School and then into professional level use. We also have a selection of batting cage corners and deluxe commercial frames that will make your batting cage a breeze to install in your facility.

These batting cage frames and corners are a must for any facility or do-it-yourselfer building a batting cage. These commercial-grade frames are made from a high quality, UV-protected polyethylene that provides excellent durability and a long lifespan. We offer these free-standing frames in both 1 1/2" batting cage frame corners and 2 1/4" deluxe commercial frame corners.

Netting Style

When purchasing batting cage netting it is important to consider the twine size (gauge). The higher the number, the thicker the net and the stronger it will be.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of your batting cage. Larger cages are better for players who need the space to practice their swings. Additionally, larger cages are more durable and last longer than smaller ones.

For added safety and security, all of our batting cage nets are fully enclosed to eliminate the risk of broken windows caused by stray baseballs. They also feature rope bordered divider nets to separate the overall enclosure into narrower tunnel areas as needed.

Square netting is the standard because it will hang straighter than diamond netting and can easily conform to the shape of your batting cage frame. The square holes also allow the energy of a struck ball to dissipate throughout multiple rows of netting as opposed to being concentrated in one area which could potentially damage or injure your players.

Netting Installation

The batting cage net needs to be securely attached at multiple points to the frame. This is important to keep the netting from falling or becoming damaged due to excess tension.

Professional batting cage netting can be custom-sized for the intended space, ensuring comprehensive coverage and effective ball containment. This customized sizing also enhances facility aesthetics, contributing to the overall design and functionality of the training space.

When choosing batting cage net, it is important to check the twine size. Many manufacturers may code their nets with a product, series or model number that does not correspond to the actual twine size of the netting. A netting with smaller twine is less durable and may tear more easily. In general, a higher twine size is preferred as it will hold up to heavy use for a longer lifespan.
